Intelligence Test

One of the cardinal principles of creating extraordinary advertising is that its authors evidence some respect for the intelligence of the audience. Having said that, I thought I’d take a look at a publication whose audience is presumably at least slightly above average in that area, thinking (eternal optimist that I am) the ratio of ex to ord advertising should be better than usual. The publication was the Harvard Business Review, but the findings were not encouraging.

On Vacation

That’s where I’ll be for the next few weeks, so my postings may get few and far between. (Not that they’ve been multitudinous and regular as clockwork lately.)

At any rate, on the subject of vacations, I received this magazine-like object in the mail the other day entitled “Caribbean Travel Planner” and I thought surely there have to be some extraordinary ads in it given subject matter as juicy as that.

Market To Mark

Much to my complete amazement it would appear that some of you actually responded to my “pass it on” request. That’s the only possible explanation I can come up with for my July unique vistors being up nearly 50% over June (and it’s not even halfway into July).

So I guess there’s some modest interest out there. I guess some people like this thing. I guess I’d better stop now before I start sounding like Sally Field at the Academy Awards…

Recently, the site has come under attack from a variety of spam commenters. Confronted with the choice of spending an hour a day deleting them (and probably contracting Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in the process) or temporarily disabling this function, I chose the latter. It’s not like I get a whole lot of comments as it is.

My IT guy tells me he will be able to deal with this problem shortly, and as soon as he does, I will be available for comments again. In the meantime, if you really want to share something just e-mail me. If it warrants full exposure, I’ll post it in an entry.

Appreciate your understanding.

Mark To Market

As some of you may have gathered, I’ve been conducting a bit of an experiment. I stopped posting on a regular basis about ten days ago just to see what would happen. To see if anyone noticed or took the time to inquire as to where I’d gone. And the answer appears to be “no”, more or less nothing happened. Which leads me to an obvious question: Am I wasting my time doing this?

I know I don’t have a large readership, but I know I have some. I also know that very few people take the time to post comments on sites, even sites with readership three times larger than my own. And finally, I know no one in his or her right mind is going to pay for access to this site (unless I start posting material I wouldn’t want the family to see). So what’s a guy to do?
